Healthcare in Pike County

HOSPITALS
Pike County is home to not one, but two hospitals -
Pikeville Medical Centerand Williamson Appalachian Regional Healthcare.

PMC is a state of the art medical facility, which in 2000 performed its first open heart surgery.

The hospital is a recently renovated, 11-story patient tower designed to accommodate a total of 500 beds.

Neurosurgery will soon be added along with a 21-bed inpatient physical rehabilitation unit, which will transform the acute care facility to a tertiary care facility able to handle trauma situations - eliminating the need to transfer patient.

There are also a total of 16 operating rooms in the hospital, which includes two rooms dedicated to open-heart surgery. In addition the hospital has spent $1.4 million on new equipment, education and training for the Heart Institute alone.

The new services are in addition to the region's only pediatric transitional care unit, a Level II neonatal intensive care unit and the accredited Leonard Lawson Cancer Center, which is the regional leader in cancer treatment.

Williamson ARH, located in South Williamson, is a part of the Appalachian Regional Healthcare chain.

A 163-bed facility with 98 acute care beds, 15 psychiatric beds, and 50 skilled nursing facility beds, Williamson ARH offers primary and a host of secondary health services.

The hospital also provides home health services; home care equipment services, physician services, and an array of wellness and rehabilitative services.

YMCA
Established in Pikeville through a concerted effort by community members and city government, the
Pikeville Area Family YMCA is a major contributor to the area's quality of life.

Offering programs throughout the county, the organization maintains the swimming pools and recreational areas in each magisterial district and is now working closely with the Belfry/South Williamson area residents to establish a center in that area.

The "Y" offers programs such as soccer, volleyball, basketball and tennis, as well as a horseshoe-pitching league. Facilities include racquetball courts, batting cages, a driving range, indoor tennis courts, and a weight room. These programs are in addition to their full range of fitness programs, which include an indoor walking track, aerobics, yoga, and kickboxing.

The Pikeville YMCA established Kentucky's first Skate Park for skaters, bikers, and skateboarders. An after?school program for youngsters as well as teens make the "Y" a place for development of "spirit, mind, and body."
