Pikeville College
For over a century, Pikeville College’s commitment to its students, to education, to Christian tradition, and to the community and region has been a vital part of the founding mission and a cornerstone of students’ success.
Established by Presbyterians in 1889 to provide educational opportunities for the “youth of the mountains,” Pikeville College offers students a broad liberal arts and sciences education with four associate and 25 baccalaureate degree programs and one doctoral program. Students also have opportunities for intercollegiate athletic competition in men’s baseball, tennis, golf, basketball, football, bowling, and cross country, and in women’s basketball, cheerleading, fast pitch softball, volleyball, tennis, golf, bowling, and cross country. Medicine in the MountainsSince its inception over a decade ago, the Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine has graduated 450 new physicians, 150 of those have completed their internships and residencies and 65 that are practicing within two hours of Pikeville. In keeping with our mission, 90 percent of our graduates are in primary care and 80 percent in medically underserved areas. The Appalachian-Osteopathic Postgraduate Training InstituteConsortium (A-OPTIC), a continuation of the medical school’s mission of recruiting, teaching and retaining osteopathic physicians, provides opportunities for graduates to complete internships and residencies in primary care training programs in hospitals across the region. Community PartnershipThe Pikeville College family extends beyond the classroom and into the community. The Booth Scholars Program provides educational enrichment for academically promising eighth grade students as they prepare for higher education. Annual science and math day camps are also offered for middle school students. Area high school students have opportunities to participate in Upward Bound and the Professional Education Preparation Program (PEPP), a two-week course of study taught by osteopathic medical students.
The College’s community band and choir share their musical talents in several free concerts throughout the year. Each fall and spring, the continuing education program offers more than 50 courses for personal and professional development, including music, dance, technology, cooking, and photography. Visitors to Pikeville College’s Community Technology Center will find a variety of programs designed to enhance educational, cultural, and economic opportunities, including a computer lab, videoconference capabilities, a 70-seat multi-purpose room, satellite downlink, and computer presentation capabilities.
